Each one is hand-poured in our Kent studio in small batches, vegan and cruelty-free from wax to wick, and finished in fully recyclable, plastic-free packaging. What Makes a Candle Non-Toxic?
A non-toxic candle is made without paraffin wax, synthetic dyes or parabens, using a natural plant-based wax and a clean-burning wick instead. Here's how every Simon James Home candle measures up:
100% natural soy wax. We never use paraffin, which is derived from petroleum. Soy wax is renewable, plant-based and burns slower and cleaner, giving our large candles a burn time of over 40 hours.
Paraben-free fragrances. Our premium fragrance oils are carefully selected to be free from parabens, so you get a rich, lasting scent without the ingredients conscious customers want to avoid.
No dyes. We don't use any dyes in our candles. The soft, natural colour of the wax is exactly as it comes.
Lead-free cotton wicks. Every wick is pure cotton with no metal core, for a steady flame and a clean, even burn.
Vegan and cruelty-free. No animal products, no animal testing. Every candle and reed diffuser we make is 100% vegan.

We think so, which is why we've never used paraffin. Soy wax is renewable and plant-based, while paraffin is a by-product of petroleum. Soy also burns at a lower temperature, so it burns more slowly and evenly, which is how our large candles achieve a burn time of over 40-50 hours. And because soy wax is naturally biodegradable, spills clean up with warm soapy water.
Yes, every product we make is 100% vegan and cruelty-free. We use plant-based soy wax rather than beeswax, our fragrance oils contain no animal-derived ingredients, and nothing we make is ever tested on animals. That applies to our entire range of candles and reed diffusers, so you can shop anything on the site with confidence.
A well-made soy candle fills a room beautifully; the scent is simply smoother and less harsh than paraffin. For the strongest fragrance, let the melt pool reach the edges of the jar each time you burn, trim the wick to 5mm and keep doors and windows closed while burning. If you like a bold scent, start with Smoky Cedarwood or Rose, Geranium & Green Leaves; for something softer and more subtle, try Cardamom & Myrtle.
