How to Make Your Candles Last Longer: Essential Burning Tips

Candles are more than just sources of light; they are essential elements in creating a luxurious and inviting atmosphere in your home. To ensure you get the most out of your luxury candles, it’s important to follow proper burning practices. At Simon James Home, we are committed to providing high-quality, hand-poured soy wax candles, and we want to share some essential tips to help you extend the life and enjoyment of your candles.

1. The Importance of the First Burn

When lighting your candle for the first time, allow it to burn until the entire surface of the wax has melted evenly. This process, which can take up to three hours depending on the candle size, prevents tunnelling - a scenario where the candle burns down the centre, leaving unmelted wax around the edges. By ensuring a full melt pool during the initial burn, you set the foundation for an even burn in future uses.

2. Regular Wick Trimming

Before each use, trim the wick to approximately ¼ inch (5 mm). This practice helps maintain a clean burn, reduces soot, and prevents the wick from mushrooming, which can cause excessive flickering and smoke. A properly trimmed wick also enhances the candle’s scent throw, allowing you to fully enjoy fragrances like our Warm Jasmine & Sandalwood Handmade Soy Wax Candle.

3. Optimal Burn Duration

It’s advisable to burn your candle for 1-2 hours at a time, depending on its size. Avoid burning candles for more than four hours continuously, as this can cause the wick to become unstable and the candle to overheat. Allow the candle to cool and solidify before relighting.

4. Safe Candle Placement

Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from drafts, vents, or flammable objects. Keeping candles away from moving air prevents uneven burning and soot formation. Always ensure the candle is out of reach of children and pets, and never leave a burning candle unattended.

5. Proper Extinguishing Techniques

To extinguish your candle safely, use a candle snuffer to prevent hot wax from splattering. Avoid blowing out the candle, as this can cause smoke and disturb the wick’s alignment. After extinguishing, centre the wick if necessary to ensure it is ready for the next use.

6. Storage and Maintenance

Store your candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to preserve their colour and fragrance. Covering candles or storing them in a container protects them from dust and debris, ensuring a clean burn. For example, our Le Croissant Handmade Soy Wax Candle should be kept in its original packaging when not in use to maintain its freshness.

By following these essential burning tips, you can enhance the longevity and performance of your luxury candles, creating a consistently elegant and aromatic environment in your home.
